LAURIE BLAKSLEE

Laurie is an Assistant Professor of Photography at Boise State University. Laurie received her MFA in Photography from the University of Arizona Tucson and her BFA with a Painting Emphasis from Boise State University.

Laurie's work has recently been exhibited at the Bellevue Art Museum, Bellevue, Washington; The Visual Studios Workshop, Rochester, New York; Huston Center for Photography, Houston, Texas and J Crist Gallery, Boise, Idaho.

Her current work includes the digital series "objects" which focuses on the female body. Through isolated close-up fragments of women's bodies, this work questions beauty, desirability, gender and representation. The possibility that these images may be digitally manipulated mirrors society's obsession with the practice of cosmetically altering the body to achieve an unattainable concept of beauty. Laurie teaches all levels of photography, and is also currently teaching basic design.

SHARON MATTHIES

Ms. Matthies has been studying LGBT television and cinema most of her life.  For example, smitten as a child by Barbara Stanwyck in The Big Valley, Sharon was delighted years later to discover she’d been watching a real-life lesbian.  She attended Boise’s first theater showing of a lesbian film (Lianna, The Flicks, 1985) and the local premieres of selections such as Desert Hearts (Flicks, 1986), Fried Green Tomatoes (1991), and The Crying Game (Flicks, 1993).  Tapped for a 1994 Diversity interview with Carole Skinner, she created a 2-page piece that included a list of 48 LGBT movies for rent at The Flicks.  Today that number has grown exponentially.  Sharon’s thrilled at the plethora of quality cinema now available, is in her third year on the QAF committee, and loves to recommend the video and book versions of The Celluloid Closet.
